Cal Ripken Jr. gave new meaning to the phrase "everyday player." From May 30, 1982 through September 19, 1998, the lanky shortstop played in 2,632 straight games for the Baltimore Orioles, shattering Lou Gehrig's "unbreakable" mark of 2,130. Beyond "The Streak," however, Ripken methodically put together a remarkable career, notching 3,184 hits, 431 home runs, 19 straight All-Star appearances, and two Most Valuable Player Awards. Though his solid, steady play earned him hero status throughout America, Ripken also had a flair for the dramatic, homering in both his record-setting 2,131st game and his final All-Star contest. Selected in the fifth round of the 2001 draft, Ryan Howard immediately impressed the Philadelphia Phillies' brass with his bat and glove. As a result, he quickly jumped from the minors to the Major Leagues, playing 18 games with the Phillies in 2004 before becoming the team's full-time first baseman in 2005. Howard hit .288 with 22 home runs and 63 RBI in 88 games, winning him 2005 NL Rookie of the Year honors. The Phillies had such faith in Howard that they traded veteran star Jim Thome, making Howard their first baseman now and for the future. Howard rewarded the Phillies for their commitment to him, as he hit .313 with 58 home runs and 149 RBI, played in his first All-Star Game and was named 2006 NL MVP.
