When Dave Winfield graduated from the University of Minnesota four professional sports teams in three different sports wanted him. Choosing baseball proved to be the right choice. Winfield joined the San Diego Padres in 1973 making the rare jump from amateur to professional baseball. In his 22-season career Winfield won the Gold Glove seven times led the Toronto Blue Jays to their first championship and amassed 3 110 career hits. As one of only seven players who are members of the 3 000-hit and 400 home run club Winfield was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2001.
